With getting away at the top of mind for many travellers in Canada, KAYAK has released their annual 2020 Travel Hacker Guide featuring some of the top destinations being searched, and among top trends this year include Osaka, Japan, and Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

According to the website, Vancouverites are searching all over the world from Japan, South Africa, Turkey, Vietnam, Netherlands, Indonesia and Fiji making the top 10.

Meanwhile, in Calgary, folks are looking for remote and distant destinations for a winter getaway.

In Toronto, Europe is proving to be a popular destination with Milan up 35 per cent, Rome up 26 per cent, and Athens up 26 per cent for 2020.

Finally, In Montreal, it’s all about sun with trending destinations including Martinique, Saint Maarten, Aruba, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Colombia.

Top wallet-friendly trips

While trending destinations are part of the website’s annual report, new this year included wallet-friendly trips right here in North America.

Top cities that made the cut included Edmonton, Abbotsford, Winnipeg, Calgary, Cancun, Orlando, Las Vegas, Puerto Vallarta, Phoenix, and Fort Myers.

Top under-the-radar destinations

Finally, KAYAK rated the top 10 under-the-radar destinations, and those making the cut this year are Zadar, Croatia, Verona, Italy, Santa Marta, Colombia, Tbilisi, Georgia, Cordoba, Argentina, Cagliari, Sardinia, and Varna, Bulgaria.

Stay local to save money. For those looking to save in 2020, domestic destinations are the way to go. Edmonton, Abbotsford, Winnipeg and Calgary have all made this year’s Wallet-Friendly list with median prices ranging from $297 to $406 and prices 38% to 48% less than average trip cost within North America.

Head south for a more affordable vacation. Canadians can flex their passports and try out top US destinations like Orlando, Las Vegas, Phoenix or Fort Myers, with median flight prices around $430 roundtrip.

Mexico is hot and inexpensive. White sand beaches and crystal clear waters are closer than you think with trip costs to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta lower than the average cost for a getaway within North America.

The possibilities are endless for under-the-radar excursions. While Dubrovnik has long been a popular choice for exploring Croatia, 2020 is the year Zadar should hit your radar. And while Cartagena has long been a go-to pick for a Colombian getaway, Santa Marta with its natural beauty and Lost City (Teyuna) deserves your attention this year.
